Zerpa opened the season on the 60-day IL with a tendon issue in his left shoulder. He was activated just after the All-Star break and optioned to Triple-A Omaha. Zerpa posted a 4.73 ERA over six starts (some during rehab), spanning 26.2 innings before he was called up by the Royals to begin August. Zerpa served as a primary pitcher, traditional starter, and reliever over the final two months. Zerpa only walked eight batters in 42.2 frames, but he fanned just 36. The main reason he recorded a high 4.85 ERA was yielding seven homers. The Royals have fortified their rotation with veterans Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha, returning Zerpa to a swingman role.
