2024 Fantasy Outlook
Santana was able to reverse a downward career trend last year in what was his age-37 season. After putting up three straight seasons with a sub-.700 OPS, he upped that number to .741 in 2023 while collecting his highest home run (23), RBI (86) and runs (78) totals in four seasons. Santana's .240 average was easily his best in four seasons, as the veteran switch-hitter no doubt benefitted from the shift restrictions. He even took advantage of the new rules in stealing six bases (his highest total in eight seasons) without being caught. Santana still has his plate discipline skills, remains a very good defender at first base and has been extremely durable throughout his career, so he should have a shot at finding regular at-bats again in 2024. Latest Fantasy Rumors
Struggling with RISP
Santana is 0-for-15 with three walks and two RBI with runners in scoring position this season.
ANALYSIS
The Twins have been awful as a team with runners in scoring position with a .142 average, but Santana individually has been even worse. The veteran first baseman has been a slow starter throughout his MLB career with a .745 OPS in March/April being his lowest for any month, and his .381 OPS through 19 games this season is second worst in baseball. Santana appears to be getting under the ball too much, as a 17.4-degree launch angle and 45.7 percent flyball rate would both represent career highs. An average exit velocity of 90.9 mph would be the second best of his career, so there is some hope if he can flatten things out. The 38-year-old may be running out of leash to turn things around, however.

Santana made the financial decision to take the contract with the Pirates and get paid to play one year removed from a fun stretch of play with Seattle that saw him provide some key moments in their improbable run to the postseason. Santana is often cited as one of the players who should most benefit from the new limitations on shifting, but even a 40-point surge in batting average (that is never happening!) would still keep him below the league averag. Santana has hovered at or under the Mendoza Line for three consecutive seasons after his last big fantasy season in 2019. Santana makes a nice first base platoon partner for Ji-Man Choi when a lefty starter is on the mound if the club wants to give him time in the field rather than DH him every day in the lineup. He should be a volume producer as he has been each of the past two seasons, but that volume comes with a severe batting average penalty. The new shifting conditions could push him back into the .220's, but wishcasting anything more than that is just greedy. We strongly encourage you to take a long look at his Stat Review section below because that section looks much better than his actual production last season.
