Signs minors deal with Dodgers
OFLos Angeles Dodgers  AAA
December 20, 2023
Swaggerty signed a minor-league contract with the Dodgers on Dec. 11.
ANALYSIS
Swaggerty ranked as a top-100 prospect at one point, but he has played in only five major-league games and slashed just .195/.319/.364 over 91 plate appearances last season in the Pirates' minor-league system. The 26-year-old will be organizational outfield depth for Los Angeles.

Swaggerty has seen his status fall from a top prospect in the Pirates' organization, thanks to the depth and quality of the system improving but also due to his own injury troubles. He had season-ending surgery on his shoulder in June of 2021, from which he wasn't fully recovered by the start of the 2022 campaign. He was then set back further by a concussion, before ultimately getting the chance to make his major-league debut on June 8. His time in Pittsburgh was short-lived - he earned only nine plate appearances - but Swaggerty did find a rhythm with Triple-A Indianapolis in the final months of the season, with his walk rate (12.5 percent) and stolen bases (20 SB) serving as standout skills. His opportunity to make an impact in 2023 could come down to whether Bryan Reynolds remains on the roster, as both Cal Mitchell and Jack Suwinski have seemingly jumped Swaggerty on the organizational depth chart. If Swaggerty does get opportunity, he'll be a potential contributor in stolen bases, on-base percentage and runs scored.
Swaggerty likely would have spent a good chunk of last season in the majors, but he suffered a dislocated shoulder in late May, which required season-ending surgery. Nonetheless, he was added to the 40-man roster this offseason as Rule 5 draft protection and should make his long-awaited big-league debut sometime this summer. He had three home runs, three steals and an 8:6 K:BB in 12 games before the injury. That power output could be evidence that the reports of him tapping into more power at the alternate site in 2020 are legitimate. Swaggerty's top fantasy-relevant tool has always been his plus speed -- he is 35-for-46 (76.1%) on stolen-base attempts 185 pro games. Pittsburgh's outfield depth chart is wide open, with the exception of Bryan Reynolds, and Swaggerty projects as the team's best outfield defender, so he should get a long look once he is up.
He was a late arrival, but Swaggerty had a strong showing at the alternate site last summer. His calling card is his plus defense in center field, thanks to plus speed and a plus arm, but he has also made strides as a hitter over the last couple seasons. In 2019, he hit .289/.367/.481 with eight home runs and nine steals in 62 games away from the extremely pitcher-friendly park in Bradenton. At the alternate site in Altoona, he was hitting balls out to the pull side, which is no small feat for lefties in that park. Now heading into his age-23/24 season, the No. 10 overall pick from 2018 will get a chance to show what he can do in the upper levels of the minors. He is the center fielder of the future, but the Pirates may wait until 2022 to start his clock unless he kicks the door down. There is significant appeal in dynasty leagues due to his 20/20 upside and clear path to playing time.
The No. 10 overall pick in 2018 out of South Alabama, Swaggerty's production as a pro has been solid, if not overly impressive. Like many Pirates position-player prospects before him, he failed to hit for notable power in the pitcher-friendly home park at Bradenton, but he hit .289/.367/.481 with eight home runs and nine steals in 62 road games. His 15.0 LD% was quite poor, but he used the whole field and had solid plate discipline metrics (10.9 BB%, 22.1 K%). A left-handed hitter, Swaggerty actually fared much better against southpaws (.845 OPS) than against opposite-handed pitching (.699 OPS), and the same was true in 2018, which is hardly ideal. Swaggerty is a leadoff-hitting center fielder capable of stealing 20-plus bases if it all clicks, but he will need to improve against righties while increasing his line-drive rate.
The 10th overall pick in the 2018 draft was excellent in 36 New York-Penn League games (140 wRC+), but fell off a cliff in a brief 16-game run in the Sally League. The culprit: his LD% dipped from 25.5 to 9.5 after the promotion. His BB% (9.5% and 9.9%) and K% (25.3% and 25.4%) were basically identical in both leagues, so it is fair to give him a pass on his struggles at Low-A. That said, the South Alabama product's predraft scouting report did not portend contact issues. In fact, while he wasn't facing great competition, he had a 38:54 K:BB in 213 at-bats as a junior. The hope coming into the draft was that he could develop into a table setter with 20-homer power and 30-steal speed. That power/speed ceiling is still there, but the left-handed center fielder will need to make more contact and pull the ball less (49.0 Pull%) to hit atop a lineup. Despite his real-life draft slot, there are better ways to use a top-10 pick in first-year player dynasty drafts.
