Max Meyer

22-Year-Old PitcherP
Miami Marlins AAA
2021 Fantasy Outlook
Meyer's 70-grade slider was the best pitch in last year's draft, and his upper-90s fastball (which touches 100) might have been the second best pitch in the class, which led to Miami selecting him third overall. His slider gets up into the low-90s and has devastating late movement out of the zone. His third-pitch changeup is improving and will inevitably play up due to how exceptional his top two pitches are. The University of Minnesota product worked as the closer as a freshman and transitioned to the rotation in 2019, so he does not have the mileage on his arm of a typical premium college pitcher. A good athlete with a low-effort delivery, Meyer had a 6.6 percent walk rate over the last two seasons, so he has a lot of starter traits. His 6-foot, 185-pound frame is a slight knock, but the main question is whether he can hold up under a starter's workload. He faired well at the alternate training site. Read Past Outlooks

Bound for Triple-A

September 20, 2021
Meyer will join Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The 2020 third-overall pick jumped straight to Double-A to begin his professional career this year and impressed over 20 starts. His 2.41 ERA comes with a 27.2 percent strikeout rate and a 52.7 percent groundball rate, which have more than offset a slightly high 9.6 percent walk rate. He'll spend a brief period of time in Jacksonville before the end of the season and will likely open next year at the same level, but he could push for a big-league debut sometime early in the season if he impresses in his early Triple-A starts.

Won't see game action this spring
PMiami Marlins  AAA
March 5, 2021
Meyer won't see any Grapefruit League action this spring even though he's in big-league camp, Jordan McPherson of The Miami Herald reports. "We don't want Max coming over to a game and trying to throw 100," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said Thursday. "We want him to get ready to pitch this season, continue his development, and we think there's a real risk with those young guys kind of trying to impress and doing too much too early. It's a danger in camp and that's something we're gonna stay away from."
