2024 Fantasy Outlook
Solometo, a 6-foot-5 lefty whose delivery elicits Madison Bumgarner comps, had an excellent 2023 season while splitting time between High-A and Double-A. He registered a 3.26 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 118 strikeouts in 110.1 innings while making 24 starts. Solometo was slightly more successful at High-A than at Double-A, although he did trim his walk rate from 10.7 percent to 6.5 percent against more advanced competition. His low-90s fastball plays up as a plus pitch due to his deceptive delivery, and his slider is a devastating mid-80s offering. Solometo's changeup is also solid, and he showed starter-level command at Double-A as a 20-year-old. He should spend the bulk of the year at Triple-A and could join the big-league rotation in late 2024 or early 2025. Read Past Outlooks

Solometo was forced to miss the Spring Breakout game due to a serious case of the flu that made its way through the Pirates' clubhouse. However, he was able to return to throw four scoreless innings while allowing one hit with Double-A Altoona on April 7 -- though he did walk three. Solometo is one of the better prospects in Pittsburgh's minor-league system, and there's a chance he could make it to the big-league roster toward the end of the 2024 campaign.

Solometo has one of the most deceptive deliveries in the minors, with Madison Bumgarner being an obvious comp for the long-limbed southpaw, just in terms of how uncomfortable opposing batters are in at-bats against him. That long arm action can lead to strike-throwing concerns, and indeed, Solometo's 10.1 BB% pushed his WHIP to 1.05 (still excellent) despite a .188 AVG against in Single-A. He will excel at generating weak contact (zero homers allowed, 50.9 GB% in 47.2 IP), and the hope is that he also misses bats at a strong clip in the coming years. The No. 37 overall pick in 2021, Solometo turned 20 this offseason and could realistically add velocity to his low-90s sinker.
