Signs with San Diego
Johnson signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Dec. 21.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has slashed .148/.209/.213 across 67 plate appearances in his major-league career, but his .828 Triple-A OPS from last season is enough for San Diego to take a chance on him. Johnson should have a chance to make the Padres' Opening Day roster based on the team's lack of outfield depth, but the 28-year-old will most likely begin the year at Triple-A El Paso.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Roster spot likely secure for now
According to Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area, Mitch Haniger and Austin Slater, who are on the injured list with oblique and hamstring injuries, respectively, aren't expected to return during the Giants' upcoming road trip, which should help Johnson retain his spot on the big-league roster for at least another week.
ANALYSIS
Johnson has played in eight games so far this season and has struggled at the plate, going 3-for-16 with a solo home run and seven strikeouts. He rode the bench for the first week of the season, but he's seen more playing time of late and is making his fourth straight start in center field Tuesday versus the Dodgers.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Johnson isn't expected to begin the year in the majors, but he has one intriguing trait, and that is speed. He's recorded at least 25 steals in each one of his minor-league seasons. Johnson managed a below-average batting line (97 wRC+) as a 26-year-old in Triple-A last year. The Giants' outfield likely won't have room for Johnson, but with a number of injury-prone players on the roster, he could work his way back to the majors with a strong start to the year at Triple-A Sacramento.
