2024 Fantasy Outlook
A well-known breakout prospect in dynasty circles after his dominant run at High-A and Double-A in his debut season, Thorpe became known throughout the baseball world as the secondary piece in San Diego's return from New York in the Juan Soto trade. Thorpe is a sturdy 6-foot-4 righty with a chance for plus-plus command and a plus-plus changeup, but the big question will be how his low-90s fastball plays against big-league hitters. He had a 2.52 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and a 182:38 K:BB in 139.1 innings, 109 of which came at High-A. He was dominant in five Double-A starts, logging a 40 percent strikeout rate and a 4.5 percent walk rate while averaging six innings per start. In many ways, Thorpe is similar to the Padres prospect version of Chris Paddack, as stellar command and a filthy changeup will try to make up for a hittable fastball. However, Thorpe's average slider is a better third pitch than anything Paddack had back then. Perhaps Thorpe could add a tick of velocity at some point, but assuming his velocity remains in the low-90s, he will have a small margin for error in the majors. He could debut this summer. Candidate for 2024 debut
White Sox general manager Chris Getz said Thursday that Thorpe could pitch in the majors this season, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Thorpe was part of the return package from the Padres in the Dylan Cease trade and is landing with a club severely lacking in big-league rotation depth. The 23-year-old reached the Double-A level in 2023 but made just five starts there, so it seems likely that a non-contender like the White Sox will give him more time in the minors. Thorpe has thrown seven scoreless innings this spring and will have a couple weeks left of Cactus League action to impress his new club.
